Rest as resistance as a movement is nothing new, but practicing it is a struggle. See how self-care building is quite literally wealth-building. Join us for a conversation about normalizing practices of a healing-centered work environment in the day-to-day hustle and what it means to build a culture of collective care for sustaining the future of our communities.

PRESENTERS

Hadija Steen Mills

Hadija Steen Mills [they|she] is a queer, mixed-Black, first-generation, and parent of twins who was born and raised on Dakota land commonly known as Minneapolis. They hold a Master in Public Health and Bachelor’s in Science from the University of Minnesota and are working to complete their PhD focused on the Sociology of Health and Illness. Hadija is passionate about the creation of a world free of inequities and advocates for autonomy for the most systematically oppressed.

Hadija is the Founding Director of the Healthcare Reparations Cooperative, a growing organization that pushes for unifying, creative, and anti-oppressive approaches to a new world where community care elicits health and healing.

Nausheena Hussain

Nausheena Hussain is on a mission to create a philanthropic legacy for change in the Muslim community. She is reimagining a world where Muslims will draw from their heritage, history, and intersectional identities in order to make the world a better place. Nausheena Hussain, a social justice activist, is principal of Nissa Consulting, providing services to Muslim-led nonprofits and organizing Muslim philanthropy. She is currently the co-founder and executive director emerita of Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment, a platform established in 2016 for Muslim women by Muslim women to raise up and celebrate their positive community impact. Nausheena is the former deputy director of the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and currently serves on the board of the Center on Muslim Philanthropy. She is co-founder and board secretary of the Brooklyn Park Islamic Center and co-founder of the Muslim Youth Leadership Award.

Dr. Joi Lewis

Dr. Joi Lewis is the author of Healing: The Act of Radical Self-Care. She is a community healer, joy instigator, scholar and founder of two organizations: Joi Unlimited and the Healing Justice Foundation. As a highly sought out speaker, facilitator and space holder, she is on a mission to put healing in the hands of everyone, everywhere. Her work is deeply informed by growing up in East St. Louis, Illinois, and is grounded in healing justice and Black liberation. She claims her adult home in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. She has a daily practice of showing up fully in her body and lives in connection with all who believe in freedom. PRESENTERS

  • Tawanna (she/her) is an award -winning architect of racially inclusive and equitable talent, supply chain, philanthropy and marketing strategies that yield transformational results for businesses, their consumers, and the communities they work in.

    For more than 20 years, she has earned the trust of executives by mobilizing teams to create and execute strategies that benefit diverse workers, consumers, and business owners and drive growth and fiscal health.

  • Kate (she/her) is the founder and CEO of Imagine Deliver, a certified B Corp and nationally award-winning insights and strategy consulting firm. A proud Muslim-American based in St. Paul, Kate is an inclusive design leader who focuses her skills on developing services and systems that drive equitable outcomes in philanthropy, community development, healthcare, government, and financial services. Imagine Deliver was honored for its commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact through its receipt of B Lab's Best for the World Award in 2022.

  • Chanda (she/her) has over 20 years of experience working in, for, and with underestimated communities. In 2017, Chanda joined The Minneapolis Foundation where she served as the Chief Impact Officer and SVP and oversees the Foundation's grantmaking programs, provides strategic direction to community initiatives and partnerships, and is the event and podcast host of Conversations with Chanda.

Pass the Mic: A History of Bold Feminist Generosity 

Take a walk-through memory lane with a feminist history of yesterday, today, and tomorrow to kick off celebrating 40 years of Minnesota’s women, girls, and gender-expansive people. We’ll kick off the salon series with an open mic story jam from local femmes who made things happen then, now, and what that legacy means for the next generation.

PRESENTERS

  • Trinity is a rising sophomore at Carleton College and a prospective political science major. She is a member of her college’s Title IX community board and a peer leader at the campus’s sexual misconduct, prevention, and response office. In addition, she interns with elected officials to get equity focused legislation passed at the state capitol. She has also worked on campaigns to inform policy stances and write speeches. Trinity strives to promote social justice through grassroots activism and policy.

  • Twila, Founder and CEO, Matriarch Digital Media, is passionate about creating media content that respects, encourages, understands and uplifts women. She created her digital Media company to do just that. Matriarch is the home of on-demand entertainment that is made with women in mind. She combines women-focused content with actionable steps to build community across audio, social media platforms and live events. She is also a news producer at Minnesota Public Radio and the co-host of the MPR podcast, small change: Money Stories from the Neighborhood. 

  • As an entrepreneur, executive coach and consultant, Sandra L. Vargas utilizes her knowledge and leadership skills to partner with public and non-profit organizations in building paths toward a more equitable future. She uses her extensive leadership skills and deep knowledge of nonprofit and public organizations to change, heal and reshape cultures to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion where people of all races and backgrounds find a thriving, supportive and highly productive work environment. As an executive coach, Vargas has specialized in coaching senior leaders, especially senior leaders of color, who have a commitment to excellence for themselves and their teams.
